Jiangdihe Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Late Cretaceous to ?Paleogene, K2-Ej, (31b)

Province:
Yunnan

Type Locality and Naming

Chuxiong Basin. The Yunnan Regional Geological Survey Team erected the Jiangdihe Formation in 1965. The type locality for the designation is along the Jiandi River of the Dayao County, Yunnan. The section for the designation is from Longjie to Hongshanshiya of the Dayao County of Yunnan Province.

Lithology and Thickness

The Jiangdihe Formation is divided into four members: Lower variegated Mudstone member is built up by alternating siltstone and mudstone. Lower purple Siltstone member is mainly represented by siltstone and silty mudstone. Upper variegated Mudstone member dominated by gray green mudstone with a saline marker bed in the upper part. Upper purple Siltstone member dominated by siltstone and silty mudstone. It is 2574.3 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base marked by gray green silty mudstone is distinguished from the Matoushan Fm made up of gray purple fine-grained sandstone. The contact is conformable.

Upper contact

It top is bounded by the occurrence of purple red thick-bedded massive fine-grained feldspar-quartz sandstone, siltstone and mudstone. The contact to the overlying Zhaojiadian Fm is conformable.

Regional extent

The formation is extensively distributed in east Yunnan. It is quite persistent in lithology. In Longjie of Dayao-Yanhuasi there is a number of multi- layers of marl, with black carbonaceous oil shale at the base; in Chuxiong-Shuangpai gypsum is intercalated in the basal part; in Matoushan of Yuanmo the upper part of the Matoushan Fm contains salt, gypsum and mirabilite; in Yuanyongjing of Lufeng gompholite in the lower part of the formation contains salt and cupreous mudstone at the base, with a thickness varying considerably from 12 to 2574 m.
